Energy crisis: more than 5,000 mortgage payment deferrals granted in one month

10 November 2022 - 5 min Reading time

The energy crisis has been ongoing for several months, and its effects are being felt by numerous households. The financial sector has committed to assisting individuals in financial difficulty as effectively as possible by offering a payment deferral for the capital portion of mortgage loans under certain conditions. After one month, the count stands at more than 5,000 approved payment deferrals.

The latest figures

The support measure from banks to offer households a deferral of capital payments for their mortgage loans, subject to certain conditions, came into effect on October 1, 2022.

  • As of October 30, 4,239 mortgage loans were granted a payment deferral within the Febelfin framework, and
  • For 967 loans, a payment deferral was granted outside the Febelfin framework (by providing tailor-made solutions). This means that a total of more than 5,000 payment deferrals were granted in the past month.

This means that a total of more than 5,000 payment deferrals were granted in the past month.

The numbers demonstrate that banks are fulfilling their commitment, as payment deferrals are being granted both within and outside the Febelfin framework. Approximately one-fifth of all payment deferrals are provided outside the Febelfin framework, on an individual basis. This indicates that banks are also ready to assist households with tailor-made solutions.

The financial sector continues to closely monitor the figures, as the situation can change rapidly in the current economic context. For example, it can be expected that many fixed energy contracts will be terminated and converted into variable contracts, and that periodic advances will be increased, and so on. Therefore, the request for payment deferrals could continue to evolve in the coming weeks. The scheme has only been in operation for one month, and payment deferrals can still be requested until the end of March 2023.

Breathing space of €460 a month

The latest figures show that the average amount of the payment deferral for affected households is approximately 460 euros per month. The households that have requested a payment deferral thus have an additional monthly amount for 12 months, which they can use to pay, for example, their increased energy bills or more expensive groceries. This monthly financial "buffer" is more than welcome for them in these difficult times.
