Sometimes you lose track of a current account or savings book. Or perhaps you've inherited without knowing it. In that case, you may have a dormant account.

An account becomes dormant if:

  • You haven't made any transactions on the account for 5 years.
  • You haven't had any contact with your bank for 5 years.

What happens to a dormant account?

What happens to a dormant account? When your bank realizes that your account is dormant, they will contact you. If they can't reach you, your bank will transfer the money to the "Dormant Accounts" department of the Federal Public Service (FPS) Finance.
