The banking sector announces the migration from numeric to alphanumeric bank identification codes. The National Bank of Belgium assigns these codes and aims to ensure that there are sufficient bank identification codes available.
Belgian bank account numbers contain this code between the 5th and the 7th character (for example: IBAN BE34 5678 9012 3456). From 1/1/2029, uppercase letters may also appear between the 5th and the 7th character of Belgian bank account numbers (for example: IBAN BE34 A678 9012 3456).
IT systems that only allow digits between the 5th and the 7th character of Belgian bank account numbers must therefore be adjusted in a timely manner (to also allow letters).
