Position: De 'European Digital Identity'

21 September 2022

In 2021, the commission came up with a proposal for a European digital identity. This proposed framework lays the foundations for a system that citizens and businesses can use across the EU.

It allows users to identify themselves and choose what personal data they want to share, both online and offline, with government authorities and companies across the EU. They will also be able to better control who has what data. Concrete applications are, for example, an electronic signature for a government document, proving your identity to the police, but also the easy transfer of data to private companies, for example to open a bank account. The financial sector advocates a secure platform that can be widely used.
