nstant transfers continue to gain ground in Belgium. In 2025, 305.2 million instant transfers were executed, an increase of 54% compared to 2024.
Over the entire year, this amounts to an average of 836,192 instant transfers per day. On 1 December 2025, a daily record was set with 1,533,667 instant transfers in a single day.
Instant transfers currently represent just over 31% of all transfers carried out in Belgium.
This growth fits within the introduction of the European Instant Payments Regulation, which makes these transfers available to all actors within the European Union.
Since October 2025, all Belgian banks have been able to receive instant transfers and offer their customers the option to initiate them at no extra cost.
Most Belgian banks, however, were already offering this functionality through their digital channels before the regulatory deadline.
An instant transfer is a transfer that is processed immediately, 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.
In concrete terms, this means that when a transfer needs to be executed during the weekend or on a public holiday, and the sender wants the money to be transferred immediately to the beneficiary’s account, they can choose an instant transfer.
The strong growth in 2025 shows that many Belgians are already choosing this option, as evidenced by the 54% increase in one year.
With some banks, transfers are even carried out as instant transfers by default. The amount is transferred to the beneficiary’s account within a few seconds, even when that account is held at another bank.
